In February, 1972, a meeting of Welsh Pony and Cob breeders and owners was called, and the Southern Counties Welsh Pony and Cob Association was formed.  The idea was enthusiastically supported by the large gathering, and some 70 people joined the Association.  The main aims of the Association are to promote the Welsh breeds and to organize lectures, visits and shows, etc., in the area, being Hampshire, Berkshire, Wiltshire and East Dorset. (Welsh Pony & Cob Society Journal 1973)

The South Eastern and South Western Associations already existed, so it therefore seemed appropriate to set up the Southern Counties to fill the geographical gap.  Robin Waite placed an advert in the local press and the inaugural meeting was held at the Crown Hotel in Lyndhurst.  The idea was enthusiastically supported and a committee formed then and there…with Mrs M D Horton elected Chairman and Robin Waite as Secretary. 

The Association today…offers a range of activities to reflect the interests of the membership, with social and instructional events, as well as four shows a year - Spring, Summer (Medal), Foal, Yearling & Ridden and the more recently introduced Winter Woollies.
